Milk Thistle Seeds PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mary

I received this great email from my aunt.  Apparently, Thistle Milk is gaining in popularity in Taiwan as a holistic remedy for liver and gallbladder problems, and appetite loss.  Kinda link spammy, but very interesting.

Milk Thistle Seeds (Powerful Remedy and Nutrition for Liver)

A Remedy For: Appetite loss, Liver and gallbladder problems, Milk Thistle seed is used in the treatment of hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver damage from toxic substances. It's also an antidote for death-cap mushroom poisoning.

What It Is and Why It Works: A compound in Milk Thistle seed dubbed silymarin has been shown to protect the liver from a variety of harmful substances. It prevents toxins from penetrating the interior of liver cells, while promoting the growth of healthy new cells to repair liver damage. Other compounds in the seed have a similarly renewing effect on the kidneys, and may be beneficial for the prostate gland.

Tea Preparation:
Use coffee grinder to grind 5 heaping teaspoon of milk thistle seeds. Put into 2,500cc boiling water. Let it simmer for 20 minutes. Turn off the fire and sit for 20 minutes. Ready for drinking. Drink about 500 cc a day. Keep the rest in the refrigerator.

This is a rough guideline. You may adjust the daily quantity and the tea's thickness based on your need.
"Is there really some tablets to buy?" I am sending the following links for your reference. You should be able to research online to find more information.

(A) Now Foods, Silymarin Milk Thistle Extract, 150 mg, 120 Vcaps $8.95
Where to buy:
http://www.iherb.com/
This is the dosage for maintenance, I think.
(B) Now Foods, Silymarin Milk Thistle Extract , 2x-300 mg, 100 Vcaps $13.42
Where to buy:
http://www.iherb.com/
This is the dosage for damage control and revival of the liver cell.
(C) NutriCology, Phyllanthus Complex, 120 Capsules $18.96
Where to buy:
http://www.iherb.com/
Phyllanthus Complex - A combination of traditional herbal foods. There are three ingredients in this product:
'Phyllanthus amarus' has been used worldwide for centuries for nutritional support of liver function, especially for Hepatitis B.
'Milk thistle' and 'dandelion root' are also traditionally recognized as nutritional support for the liver, including Hepatitis C. These three natural herbs are known for their function of liver cleansing (get rid of the liver poison) and provide nutrition for the liver.
www.iherb.com is the mail order company that I found sells above three items at the cheapest price. If you find better deal, please share with us.

Testimonial:
My father who lives in Taipei recently found out that he had Hepatitis C. His liver function index, which should be around 30 and 40 for normal people, started out around 200 and 300. After taking the medicine that the hospital gave him for one month, the index raised to 400 and 500. I mailed him the Milk Thistle Seeds to make tea. He drank it for ten days, the index dropped to 210 and 256. Two more weeks later, the lab test showed further dropdown to 107 and 201.
My father just got the latest lab test after taking milk thistle for another two weeks. His liver function index has further dropped to 47 and 60 (from 107 and 201 two weeks ago). At his last hospital visit, the doctor did not even give him the prescription drugs, neither did this time. The doctor told him that the medicine from the hospital wouldn't work at all. So, my father's situation is under good control. He will take milk thistle regularly for maintenance purpose.
Important:

Although Milk Thistle cures and nourishes liver, taking it long term can result in some build-up in kidney.
Therefore, take it fearlessly when people have liver illness. Its medical function is much greater than the slightly possible harm of the build-up.

For maintenance purpose, you may want to take it, say, about one month and stop for a little while before you take it again.
In both cases, be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and RAW vegetable especially 'spring mix' (or it's called 'baby green'). They will wash out the build-up and other poison in your body. (Costco sells organic spring mix.) Organic fruits and vegetables are highly recommended.

We put fruits and spring mix together with nuts in the mixer and sort of 'drink' a large cup of it (juice and fiber or pulp) to ensure quantity consumption
